Boasting over 300 mi (483 km) of shoreline, the Door County peninsula is almost
completely surrounded by water – Green Bay on the north and west, and Lake Michigan
on the east. The county's only city, Sturgeon Bay, is a tourism hot-spot made
popular by its famously-friendly residents and attractive downtown. In Spring,
the city hosts the annual Door County Festival of Blossoms, including the popular
Maritime Museum Lighthouse Walk. Southern Door County is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places for its concentration of red brick Belgian farmhouses,
which are visually contrasted against the area's gently rolling hillsides. As
with most inspiring landscapes, artists gravitate to Door County and can hone
their skills at The Clearing in Ellison Bay, a school of arts, literature and
ecology. The second largest community, Sister Bay, lures visitors with fine
dining restaurants, historic B&B's and the popular Fall Festival, complete with
a parade, fireworks and an arts & crafts exhibition.
